Approximate distance: 70 km
Setting off from La Casona de los Güelitos towards Puente San Miguel, take the A-8 towards Santander, then continue towards Bilbao until reaching Hazas de Cesto, where this route begins. From here, the journey will take you through Hazas de Cesto, Arredondo, Asón, Veguilla, Ramales de la Victoria, Ampuero, Limpias, and Colindres.
The natural surroundings of the Asón and Soba Valleys are a true paradise. Their many trails, landscapes, and routes offer countless attractions, mainly focused on nature. Highlights include the Collados del Asón Natural Park, the source of the Gándara River, and its extensive Cave Network.
With over 4,000 caves, the Upper Asón area forms one of the largest underground systems in Europe. Once known only to expert cavers, many of these natural treasures can now be explored through guided tours suitable for all visitors.
From Hazas de Cesto, crossing spectacular mountain scenery, you will reach Arredondo, known as the “capital of the world” by emigrants who once departed from here to America.
Through the beautiful Soba Valley, surrounded by stunning landscapes of the Natural Park, you will arrive at the source of the Asón River. Later, in Ramales de la Victoria, visit the prehistoric Covalanas Cave and El Mirón Cave. Don’t miss the unique Rasines Bullring, notable for its unusual square shape.
The next stop is Ampuero, capital of the lower Asón Valley, located near the Sanctuary of La Bien Aparecida, patron saint of Cantabria. Nearby, Limpias stands out for its remarkable civil architecture, with stately homes and palaces such as the Eguilior Palace, now a National Parador Hotel.
The route ends in Colindres, where you can admire an interesting collection of manor houses, including the House of Doña Ana de Blomberg.
A journey through lush landscapes, hidden caves, and the pure essence of nature.
