Trasmiera. Enjoying the Sea
Approximate distance: 85 km
Setting off from La Casona de los Güelitos towards Puente San Miguel, take the A-8 towards Santander, then continue towards Bilbao until reaching Entrambasaguas, where this route begins. From here, the journey takes you through Entrambasaguas, Villaverde de Pontones, Pedreña, Somo, Langre, Bareyo, Ajo, Isla, Noja, Santoña, and Escalante.
The coastline of the Trasmiera region offers a spectacular landscape of rugged cliffs and wide sandy beaches, including stunning unspoiled shores such as Langre Beach and Galizano Beach.
Like many villages in the area, Entrambasaguas boasts a rich architectural heritage of manor houses and palaces, as well as a hidden gem: the Fuente del Francés Spa, a 19th-century thermal bath.
In Villaverde de Pontones, admire its impressive manor houses or visit the nearby La Garma Cave, an important prehistoric site.
Along the shores of the Bay of Santander, connected by a vast beach, lie Somo and Loredo. Cross the bridge over the Cubas Estuary to reach Pedreña, a charming seaside village home to the famous golf course where Seve Ballesteros began his legendary career.
Continue to Galizano and take in the breathtaking cliffs of Langre, a perfect example of Cantabria’s traditional coastal landscape, combining agriculture and natural beauty with a pristine beach.
Before reaching Isla, visit the Lighthouse of Ajo and the Romanesque Church of Santa María de Bareyo. In Noja, alongside its beautiful beaches, look for the Palace of Zilla.
At the foot of Mount Buciero, within the Santoña Marshes Natural Reserve, lies Santoña, a fishing town renowned for its anchovies and its stunning marshlands.
The Santoña, Noja, Joyel and Victoria Marshes Natural Reserve, covering 4,500 hectares, is a vital sanctuary for waterfowl and a paradise for birdwatchers and nature lovers. This protected ecosystem is a key stopover for migratory birds traveling between northern Europe, Doñana, and North Africa, offering different species throughout the seasons.
Finally, Escalante preserves an important architectural heritage. At the Capuchin Convent of Montehano, you can find the tomb of Doña Bárbara de Blomberg, mother of Don Juan of Austria, who spent her final days in this area.
A coastal route full of sea, nature, and Cantabrian charm.
